Classes are offered to Preschool boys and girls from 2 and 1/2 years of age. Students are taught specially graded movements (to popular kids music such as Disney, Hi-5, Wiggles etc) and dances in Ballet, Tap and Jazz/Funk, giving them an introduction to these forms of dance. They also learn the discipline of group lessons and behaviour while having fun and and enjoying their class. To ensure our Preschool classes run smoothly, we always have 2 teachers.
The Class
During their 40-minute class, we use assorted props such as tambourines, rhythm sticks, a huge colourful parachute and long ribbon sticks. Our class starts with classical ballet; they will leave these shoes on to do some jazz, and then we will send your child out to you to change into their tap shoes and have a drink.
Parents are not encouraged to sit in on the classes as the children work much better when with their teacher alone. Parents are asked to wait outside the room, however you can still see your child through the doors and windows. Parents are invited to watch the class at the end of each term, to view their child’s progress.
Please be aware that the first couple of classes are often unsettling as the children relax into their surroundings and become familiar with their teacher. Your patience during this early settling period is extremely important to both the children and teachers.
It would be very helpful to your teacher if your child could wear a name tag.
Concerts
Preschool students are invited to perform in the studios mid year Pantomimes and Christmas Concerts, giving them the opportunity to dance on stage in costume.
Uniform
To start off,
girls may wear, leotard, bike shorts and top or one-piece swimming costume. Try to put their hair in a bun, or pulled back away from the face. Boys may wear shorts and a T-shirt. It’s fine to start ballet in bare feet, but for tap we recommend putting on some hard-soled shoes. We understand you may want to wait for a few weeks until purchasing their uniform and dance shoes.
